The Family Orchestra Day is a collaboration between the Torbay Symphony Orchestra and Dartington Arts to bring families onto the estate for a fun and educational afternoon of music. Over 3 hours, children will be introduced to the instruments of the orchestra, have a chance to play a variety of instruments (with the guidance of TSO musicians) and enjoy a complete performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5.
Over the past decade, provision of music in schools and the opportunities to learn a musical instrument have been severely impacted. In aid of this, Torbay Symphony Orchestra has been involved in educational outreach work for many years, which usually involves visiting schools with a small orchestra, as well as working closely with other organisations such as SaMM.
The primary aim is to encourage children and young adults to take up an instrument and help them to overcome the first few hurdles that all beginners face.
During the concert, children are encouraged to sit in the orchestra, next to an instrument of their choice, so that they have the experience not only of listening to the music, but also what it feels like to sit amongst performing musicians, reading music and responding to what is going on around them.
Tickets are being sold through the Dartington Box Office and are available from: https://www.dartington.org/precheckout/?instance=940059
